When you have a loved one that passes away, the situation is never simple or easy. However, planning a funeral service during COVID-19 can seem extremely confusing and daunting on top of the usual difficulties. If you are in need of funeral home services during the pandemic, you may wonder what you can or should expect from the process. Get to know some of the facts about planning a funeral during the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, you can feel more capable of handling the situation and getting your loved one's funeral planned as well as possible.

Plan to Wear Masks

While the prospect of mourning and going through a funeral service in a mask does not necessarily seem like a desirable prospect, it is the safest way that you can still have a funeral service in spite of the pandemic. Many funeral homes will offer a full range of funeral home services including graveside services and the like, but they may require that guests wear masks during the services.

This is a way to keep everyone in the funeral home safe, including the staff and those attending the service. COVID-19 is highly contagious, and gatherings of more than a few people run the risk of high transmission rates. And masks defend against the spread of the disease.

So, if you are planning a funeral, plan on masks. You should have a box of masks at the door of the funeral home for services in case someone comes without a mask. That way, everyone will be wearing one during the service.

Plan on Limited Capacity

Many cities and states have restrictions on the size of gathering that is allowed in a certain space. Some businesses also have their own restrictions and rules about how many people they will allow in the space.

As such, you should plan on a limited capacity for the funeral services. Plan on just having the closest family at the service and a few select friends. Tell people that there is a limit on the number of people allowed and that cards, donations or the like are welcome in lieu of attendance.

You could also have a Zoom or other online video call option for the funeral. This setup will allow people to "attend" the funeral without being there in person. That way, no one who wants to mourn with everybody else will be excluded in the process.

Now that you know more about planning a funeral during the COVID-19 pandemic, you can be sure you are ready when you contact a funeral home about their services.
